Parking in Taos: Your Guide to Finding the Best Spots

Whether you're a local running errands or a visitor taking in the beauty of Taos, knowing where to park can make your day a lot smoother. While parking in town has recently seen a few changes, with more paid options now available, there are still a few convenient free spots to take advantage of. Here’s your friendly guide to navigating parking in Taos, so you can focus on enjoying all that this charming town has to offer.

Where to Park for Free

Let’s start with the good news—there are still some spots where you can park for free!

One of the best places is Kit Carson Park. Just a short walk from the heart of downtown, Kit Carson Park offers plenty of parking at no charge. It’s perfect if you want to leave your car for a while and take a leisurely stroll to the Plaza, check out local shops, or grab a bite at a nearby café.

Another great spot for free parking is at the Taos Public Library. Whether you're headed there to browse some books or just need a central place to park for a few hours, the library parking lot is completely free and often has available spaces.

Paid Parking: What You Need to Know

If you’re planning to park closer to the Plaza or on some of the busier streets, chances are you’ll come across the new paid parking system. But don’t worry—it’s designed to be easy and convenient!

Most of the parking lots and street parking in the central area now have kiosks where you can pay for your spot. If you’d rather skip the kiosk, you can use your phone to pay. Just text “Taospark” to 25023 or follow the signs at each lot to scan a QR code. This will take you to the Town of Taos parking app, where you can quickly pay for your parking online.

When Do You Need to Pay?

Paid parking is in effect Monday through Saturday from 9am to 6pm in all designated parking areas. Outside those hours—or if you’re parking on a Sunday—you’re in the clear to park for free.

The town has implemented this paid system to help manage parking in the busiest parts of Taos, ensuring there’s turnover and availability for both locals and visitors. It’s a small fee that goes a long way in keeping the town running smoothly, especially during peak tourist seasons.

A Few Handy Tips

  • Stay Alert for Free Spots: While most central parking is now paid, there are still pockets of free street parking outside the busiest areas. Keep an eye out for these spots, especially on side streets.

  • Use the App for Convenience: If you're planning to park for more than a quick stop, using the Town of Taos parking app can save you time. Plus, you can pay from anywhere—no need to walk back to the kiosk.

  • Keep an Eye on the Clock: Since paid parking hours are 9am to 6pm, planning your visits early in the morning or later in the evening means you might score a free spot!

Parking Made Easy

While parking in Taos has seen some changes, it’s all about making the process simpler and more accessible for everyone. With free parking options at Kit Carson Park and the Taos Public Library, plus the ease of the new paid system, finding a spot is as simple as a few taps on your phone or a short walk from a free lot.

So whether you’re here to visit Taos' vibrant shops, explore local galleries, or enjoy a meal with friends, parking is one less thing to stress about. Now that you know the best spots and how to use the new system, you can focus on what really matters—soaking in everything this beautiful town has to offer!
